(8/10) There have been many Asia live releases over the last years. Some of them better and some of them maybe not that much needed. Now there is a new one coming: "Axis XXX in San Francisco MMXII". My first reaction was "OK, another one.". But by having a look on the title I got more curious and after listening to the CD I must say that it is one of the most interesting live albums of the iconic band.

The reason why this album creates excitment ist the fact that it was the original line-up that performed the show that took place on November 7th 2012 in the Regency Ballroom in San Francisco. Geoff Downes, Steve Howe, Carl Palmer and John Wetton played a set that night which reflected on the first two albums of the band, real milestones in rock, and they also paid attention to the reunion albums incl. the "XXX" record which has been opublished in 2012.

This mix of songs from different periods of the band makes the live recording to an interesting one. First of all it is great to see/hear, that the 'reunion' songs go very good together with the old material. Without knowing the albums you might not even be able to say from which era they are taken from. A good sign. And it's always a pleasure to especially listen to the old musical pearls like "Heat of the moment", "The smile has left your eyes" and "Don't cry". Those have been an important part of my youth and it's always a pleasure to hear them again.

The quality of sound is a good one too that makes this album to one of the best live recordings of the dinosaurs of prog rock. It's a clear and diverse sound that builds the foundation for this very good album.

"Axis XXX in San Francisco MMXII" is the live album from Asia at least I've been waiting for since many years. It also shows, with all respect to the other line-ups, how important it was for the band to have the original four guys together. Even though also in some other constellations Asia released good music it is these four guys that play in another league. An album that is more than only being something for collectors.
