(8/10) There are two Shinings coming from Scandinavia. There are the brutal black metal Shining from Sweden that released their new album a few months ago, while this Shining is from Norway. The music of the Norwegian guys is 'slightly' different since they combine metal music with jazz elements by giving the whole sound an experimental touch. This isn't less intesive than the Swedish Shining; it's just a total different starting point and sound experience.
Shining is the brainchild of Jørgen Munkeby and it was/is the multiinstrumentalist that signs responsible for the crossover of all those different influences that can be found back in the band's music.
Like on "Blackjazz" in 2010, also this time the name of the new album clearly states about what to expect. "International Blackjazz Society" is a wild record that starts with a weird jazz based intro called "Admittance". Already at this stage Shining puts the saxophone into the spotlight; an instrumental that isn't really metal, but one that fits very well. The intro leads to the first 'real' song. "The Last Stand" is an well done hybrid out of electro elements with hard rocking guitars. It's a thrilling mix.
"Burn it all" emphasises this expression with dark keyboards in the beginning and some distorted vocals by Munkeby. The song is kept on slow pace which makes it even more intense.
But the album contains also brutal noise orgies like on "Thousand Eyes". This tune is like the outburst of a vulcano where hot magma slowly builds up pressure that explodes in the chorus parts.
Back to the saxophone with "House of Warship"; a number that is weird and fascinating all in once. With "Church of Enduance" the album comes with another short instrumental intro before "Need" marks the end of a special and different album.
Shining creates music that is very special. This isn't mainstream, this is pure and individualised creativity. The band takes a step further in developing metal music. Sometimes those steps better would not have been taken. When it comes to Shining I must say that the result is impressive and each open-minded metal fan should check it out.
