(8/10) It's more and more that I take a shine on what's In Extremo doing. For many years I could really find my way into their music, something that changed with the latest release "Quid Pro Quo". Lucky enough it's this album that was the base for the newest live recording which hit the shelves a few days ago.
With such a strong studio record in their backpack In Extremo embarked on a tour through Germany, Austria and some other European countries and it was the show in Cologne that is now available in various formats in the record shops.
It's not a too big of a surprise that the focus was on the new album. After a short intro the show started with the awesome title track "Quit Pro Quo". This powerful rocker act as a well chosen opener that got the adrenaline flowing. It's this tune, but also anthems such as "Sternhagelvoll" and "Störtebeker" that are made for being performed live.
As expected from a balanced live show also some classics are expected from the fans and the seven-piece had them on the setlist too. "Feuertaufe" and "Spielmannsfluch" have been well received by the fans. In this context I have to mention that the show in Cologne contained more songs than what ended up on the CD and "Vollmond", as one example, didn't make it on the live album. This might be a bit of a downer, but in the end In Extremo can fall back on so many good song that fans can cope with such a decision. 17 songs gives the listener still a lot of In Extremo - 74 minutes to be precise.
Next to all the mentioned it's the atmosphere that was captured very well. This live album sounds authentic. The enthusiastic crowd can be heard more than once, the band itself is enjoying the show and the sound itself is diverse and powerful.
In Extremo is gaining momentum with their music. The guys entered the charts with their latest studio album and I guess that this live album will be a great x-mas gift for fans and might help in finding some new friends too.
